What Are Receding Gums?

Gum recession occurs when the tissue of your gums pulls away from the teeth and exposes the roots. As the recession progresses, “pockets” form around the teeth, allowing food and bacteria to accumulate and worsen the situation.

Left untreated, the teeth can become sensitive or loose and may ultimately require extraction.

There are a number of underlying causes of gum recession, including harsh brushing techniques and gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, which is worsened by tooth grinding.

How We Help

In your regular checkup and clean appointments, we will investigate for signs of harsh brushing. If that seems to be a problem for you, we’ll explain and demonstrate proper brushing techniques to prevent further recession.

If the gum recession issue is severe, treatment options may include gum graft surgery to replace lost tissue, or scaling and root planing which is a deep cleaning below the gum line to address underlying gum disease. We will always begin with a thorough examination, including any necessary photos and X-rays. If we identify gum recession, we will assess the underlying cause of the recession and offer you treatment recommendations tailored to your specific needs.

Our highly experienced dentists take the time to explain all treatment options so you fully understand the process involved and can make an informed decision.

In addition to treating the condition to stop the progression, we will also offer recommendations to help prevent future problems.
